Do not over-rely on digital communication and tools. Personal contact is still a powerful best practice.


The biggest change in marketing that I see coming in the next 5 years is?

Recovery of marketing budgets and best practices post-COVID and social unrest.


How did you start Insight Garden?

Insight Garden is an interesting story. I was at Foote, Cone, and Belding for 20 years, a major agency. When IPG, the big holding company, bought us out, a lot of us that were very senior but not quite at that gold parachute level were downsized. Fortunately for me, I had been doing a lot of work just before that with more of the entrepreneurial aspects of the agency. That was right at the time when the Internet was just kind of at its infant stage. I’d been on the team internally where people said, “This Internet thing might be big. Maybe we should put some people on this.” I had literally been working on new business pitches for the Internet with some of the account folks and creative folks when we got downsized. So it kind of set me up really well entrepreneurially when I left. I decided to go independent and have been doing this for over 15 years.
