So tell us about Navigator Sales And Marketing because I know you have a fascinating background in the food and beverage industry.
I started many, many years ago in the food business working both retail side and then a grocery retailer and then a manufacturer. So about seven years ago now, my husband and I actually started Navigator Sales And Marketing. We are basically a food broker. We serve really as a sales support for consumer packaged goods company. We serve sometimes as their sales team and in their marketing support. So we have about 25 different brands and we have those products across thousands of stores across the country right now. So that’s what we do.
Did you ever have any opportunity to meet Indra Nooyi?
I did. On a couple different occasions, I was able to meet Indra. She’s very, very inspiring, very authentic. She stays true to who she is. She has such a great leadership presence. But I actually, one year, won her Chairman’s Award and had to go to Purchase, New York, and receive it. She was a great, great inspiration and I just loved her authenticity and her leadership.
So I know that some of your products have been distributed, especially during COVID and that have been very important in COVID. Do you want to reference any of how that has worked?
Years ago, when I was young and I was trying to figure out what career I wanted and what industry I wanted to go into, I distinctly remember my father saying “Go into the food business; people always have to eat.” And he was right. And I think about COVID and this industry being central, being essential, across the world to what we do. And so a few of my brands whether they’re snacks like Old Trapper Beef Jerky or On The Border Chips. People are at home snacking more. We have a great brand we represent: Ecos Laundry Detergent, plant-based laundry detergent. And people are cleaning more and using more hand soap and so forth. And so it has been a crazy time, but we were just perfectly positioned in the grocery industry with the right products.
Tell us about the Navigator Lighthouse Foundation that you’re starting.
Yeah. We’re just launching that. And one of the things that we realized during this time and also just during the social unrest is, what could we do to make a difference? My husband and I just watching the news, and one afternoon said one of the big messes that we see in the grocery industry are women-owned brands, are black-owned brands, are brown-owned brands. And really I look at how much money these brands are getting. I think it’s something like less than 3% of women are getting venture capitalist funds. I think for women of color it’s about 1%. So how do you get a brand to where it can be successful in the grocery industry if you’re not getting the funding to do that? And so we thought, well let’s make a difference ourselves. So we launched Navigator Lighthouse Foundation which is really a guiding point for women and people of color to help their brands get on the shelves. And so we are going to offer education, access, training, scholarships for the various programs that are in the grocery industry and, in our own way, try to make a difference.
