Houchens Consulting is an internet marketing company that helps small and large businesses reach their current and future customers online.

How do you define success?

Depends on the goals we’re working to achieve with the client but those are clearly defined during the onboarding of a client.

What makes your company unique?

Transparency. While this shouldn’t necessarily be a unique selling proposition, I allow all my clients access to exactly what it is I’m doing and the strategy behind it. I’m not here to hoard the secrets, my goal is to make the business more successful and if I do that right, there’s no need to hide my methods from them.

Who in the industry inspires you and why?

I really enjoyed following Rand Fishkin throughout this time at Moz talk about how things are changing.

What is a tip for success that you would provide someone in your same industry?

Don’t over-promise because you know it’s what a customer wants to hear. I’ve heard too many clients feel cheated from prior consultants in the online industry.

How did Houchens Consulting get started?

Houchens Consulting is an Internet marketing consulting agency. We focus on local and national brands. Being born and raised here in Gainesville, I can see there are a lot of small businesses that don’t know the options that are available to make their business visible on things like Google with Google Ads or My Business. We focus a lot on the smaller businesses without the multimillion-dollar budgets just to make sure that their services show up when their customers are searching for them in Google.

Who is your ideal customer?

An ideal customer would be a business who understands the importance of being online and having that digital presence. They know that there are customers out there that are searching for services but don’t necessarily understand or know that that brand exists for them. On top of that, they understand the importance of having an optimized platform such as Google My Business or their web site.

What advice do you have for college graduates entering the marketing world right now when jobs aren’t available?

When I was starting, a lot of it was my own projects. It’s important to find a project you’re passionate about and really work on that project not necessarily for monetary gain but just for the experience. A lot of people say work for free and I am a big proponent of that. However, I think working for free on your own project helps you gain experience along the way while allowing you to get involved in the things that you think you want to do.
